Women in Harmony presents "Bread and Roses"

Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 pm and Sunday May 7 at 4:00 pm

First Parish Congregational Church

12 Beach Street, Saco, ME

Women in Harmony presents its spring concert, "Bread and Roses," on May 6 and 7 in Saco.

Portland's 60-member women's chorus, Women in Harmony has been a choral fixture and a voice for social justice for almost 25 years. "Bread and Roses" is the group's second concert on this season's overarching theme of hunger. The chorus is partnering with Good Shepherd Food Bank for the event.

The concert program explores the ideas of hunger, including emotional hunger, and other basic human needs. These are represented in such pieces as Famine Song, Arlington (the Wailin' Jennys), Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home, Oye (in Spanish), and Bread and Roses. The slogan/poem/song Bread and Roses is associated with the successful textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1912. The strike was largely led by women and involved numerous immigrant communities.

The song Bread and Roses expresses the spirit of this concert -- one of protest balanced by hope and the urgency to work together for peace and justice. Other pieces that proclaim this message include The Tree of Peace, You Are the New Day, Hope is the Thing with Feathers, Fired Up (Holly Near), Stand Together, and There's a Light.

Women in Harmony is delighted to welcome the Boston-based women's chorus Voices Rising as its guest for this concert. Each group will perform its own set, and the two choruses -- more than 100 voices strong -- will sing six songs together. A special feature of their joint set will be Quiet, the song that has gone viral since songwriter MILCK and friends sang it at the Women's March on Washington last January 21.

Performances will take place at First Parish Congregational Church, 12 Beach Street, Saco, on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 7 at 4:00 pm. Tickets are available at Longfellow Books and Starbird Music in Portland, and Nonesuch Books in South Portland and Biddeford, as well as online at www.wihmaine.org. Advance purchase price is $12, or $15 at the door. Students and seniors, $10.

In keeping with the concert theme, attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Good Shepherd Food Bank.
